How to Apply for a UK Tourist Visa

This guide is for applying for a U.K. Tourist Visa at the VFS Manila branch for Philippine Passports. This article is based on my visa application experience as of Jan. 20, 2016. :)  There’s a printout at the bottom of the blog post for your convenience.

Many Filipinos know that in order for us to travel to every first-world country, we need to apply for a tourist visa. I don’t see visas as a bad thing because this is a way for the government to keep track of who’s going in and out of their country, but it is ridiculously unfair to third-world country passport holders. We usually end up spending more than we should, just for the sake of being able to travel. Sadly, this is the harsh reality we have to accept.

My 2016 U.K. Visa would be the sixth time I applied for a tourist visa to any country within the past three years and my second time to apply for a U.K. Visa. Given this, applying should be a piece of cake, right? The answer is no. The moment I found out a decision have been made, I got so anxious that I canceled all of my events and appointments on the day the passport is scheduled for delivery That way, if I get denied, I can cry in the comforts of my home. Lol.

Anyway, this is going to be a lengthy post because I received so many visa questions in my previous U.K. Visa post that I want my post to be really thorough. It’s divided into sections: from answering the application form to the day of submission. This article only serves as a guide, and I hope you’ll find it helpful when you apply, but please be reminded that whatever is written here does not guarantee visa approval.

Know the type of visa you’re applying forHow To Apply For A U.K. Visa in the Philippines

There are many types of Tourist Visas for the U.K., I kid you not. Make sure you’re applying for the correct type of visa by taking this short quiz. At the end of the quiz, click and read the links corresponding to your type of visa.

The website has all the information you need.

Filling up the Application Form

How To Apply For A U.K. Visa in the Philippines

Register an account HERE. This website is where your entire visa application will be kept. You can edit and save your application until you’re ready to book your preferred schedule of appointment, pay the fee (my application cost USD131), and print the form.

I submitted my application on January 20, exactly three months before my trip, but started filling up my application a week before. This gave me ample time to sort out the details. Bear in mind that U.K. Visa Application Form is the most complex form I’ve ever had to fill up with.

Always save your progress

How To Apply For A U.K. Visa in the Philippines

Fill up your form with all your details. If you’re unsure, skip the question and answer them again later. Always, always save your progress because our internet in this country sucks. (You know it’s true!)

The application form is divided into sections. If you’re done answering the questions thoroughly, the tabs on the right will turn from black to green.

Income and Expenditure

How To Apply For A U.K. Visa in the Philippines

* This is a sample breakdown of my travel expenses in the U.K. DO NOT COPY THIS. You need to create an analysis of your own expenses, based on your itinerary. *

The Income and Expenditure section is probably the most confusing part of the application form. I don’t know if it’s only confusing because Filipinos are more familiar with the American English, or it’s really confusing??? Luckily, the Internet is at your disposal! A quick Google search will lead you to several forums that will help you decipher the questions.

  • Do you have savings, properties or other income, for example from stocks and shares?
    • I believe that this refers to monthly passive income, like interests from your savings account and investments from stocks and shares.
  • How much do you spend each month on living costs?
    • The monthly living expenses in your home country.
  • What is the cost to you personally of your trip in GBP(£)?
    • From what I’ve read online, this question refers to the total cost that you expect to spend throughout your journey. The total cost should be able to support your itinerary.
  • The total amount of money you have for this trip
    • The total amount you’ve saved up for your journey. Remember: The number on your bank certificate should be able to prove that you can support the amount stated here.
  • The cost of your living expenses
    • This refers to your living expenses while in the United Kingdom. I assumed that the living expenses also include the payment of the rent, therefore stating £1,300. Now that I think about it, I hope my breakdown made sense to the consul who reviewed my application.

Be honest and be detailed as possible!

How To Apply For A U.K. Visa in the Philippines

There’s a limit on the text box, and since I intend to stay in the U.K. for four months, so it’s not possible to write the nitty gritty details of my trip. This probably the reason why my visa was issued effective immediately, but more on that later. If you’re going to the U.K. for a month or two, try your best to write a detailed itinerary in your application form.

Confirm Your Application

How To Apply For A U.K. Visa in the Philippines

Before confirming your entire application form, make sure to double check everything. Once all sections are complete, click the ‘Confirm’ button to review all of the answers you have given. You can save this particular web page and print it for reviewing purposes only. When you’re ready, click ’Submit’ and digitally signed the form, the form is considered final, and you can no longer edit it.

Last but not the least, make sure you print the submitted application form before going to the VFS Office. Otherwise, if you don’t print the form, they will charge you for P15 per page!

Document I’ve Gathered and Submitted

Here are the things that I submitted for my application:

  • 1 Printed Copy of Application Form
  • Current Passport (with 6 months validity within travel period)
  • Original and Photocopies of Previous Passports and Visas
  • Birth CertificateOptional, but nice to have. They even returned the photocopy!
  • Letter of EmploymentMust include company contact details, role, salary, and starting date.
  • Bank Certificate
  • Bank Statements (for the past 6 months)
  • Sponsor’s Bank Certificate***
  • My Eurotrip Itinerary – Since I’m applying for a Short Term Study Visit, they disregarded my proposed itinerary. If you’re studying there for less than 6 months, get a Tourist Visa.
  • Airbnb/Hotel Details
  • Letter of Offer – This letter is from the private college I’m going to. It serves as proof that studying is my primary purpose of visit.
  • Photocopy of OR/CR and Land Titles – Optional, but nice to have. They only returned the photocopy of my land title, though.
  • VFS Global Appointment letter – Although no one asked me to present this letter, it’s best to still bring a copy because walk-in visa applicants are charged PHP2,000.

*** Requirements from Sponsors may vary, please check the GOV UK Website for more information. In my case, I declared my mother as an additional financial support, on top of my earnings and bank account, to further prove to the U.K. Embassy that I can afford this trip, and if things go wrong, they wouldn’t have to worry. I submitted an explanation letter, a photocopy of my sponsor’s passport, and an original copy of her bank certificate.

If you’re not willing to let go of your original documents, please provide a photocopy of your documents. Otherwise, the British High Commission will not return your documents.

VFS Makati

On The Day of Appointment

After filling up your application form and pay the corresponding visa fees, you may now schedule your visa appointment online. On the same website, you’ll be requested to select which date and time you wish to submit your documents. I chose January 20, at around 7:30 AM.

Visa applicants must lodge their documents at the VFS Global office in Makati. The VFS Global is a processing center that acts as a “middleman” between visa candidates and embassies of many countries. Their job is to accept and check your documents and forward it to the corresponding embassy. To be honest, I prefer submitting my documents to the VFS because they follow a strict and organized process in visa applications.

On January 20, 2016, I arrived at the VFS UK Office in Eco Plaza at exactly 7:20 AM, 10 minutes prior my visa appointment. I went through the usual security checks, and the guards informed me that bags aren’t allowed in the office. By bags, I mean, ALL BAGS! Even my small crossbody, where I kept my wallet and phone, wasn’t allowed inside. Since I’m alone and didn’t bring a car with me, I had to deposit my stuff at a locker for PHP100.

By 7:30 AM, I was standing at the lobby counter. The staff checked my application form and passport, then handed me a document checklist, an SMS Enrollment form, and queue slip. She then instructed me to fill up the form and proceed inside the VFS UK Office.

A big “UKV11” was written my queue slip, and when I entered the UK Office, the VFS officers were already processing UKV8. To be honest, I’m quite impressed how fast the process is, considering that it took me four hours when I first applied in 2013. Anyway, while waiting, I organized my documents according to the checklist and filled up the SMS form.

My number was called around 7:45 AM my papers, and it took us 15 minutes to process and check my documents. Immediately after, I was called to get my biometrics and picture taken. The whole process, including the security control and locker deposit, only took me 40 minutes! Quick, easy, and convenient.

There is NO interview unless the U.K. embassy decides that they want to see you in person.

Visa Expenses

$131 (PHP6,386.57 at time of payment) Visa Fee + PHP500 for Passport Courier Service + PHP150 for SMS Updates + PHP100 for Locker = PHP 7,136.57

Processing Time

I received my visa on the 27th of January, the sixth working day since I submitted my application. The standard processing time for Tourists Visa is 15 working days.

Sidenote: I assumed that if I apply early, everything else is going to be a breeze. I could book early, save money, make better itineraries, and so on… but I was so wrong! Because I applied for a Short Term Study Visa instead of the Standard Tourist Visa, the U.K. Embassy gave me a 6-month visa that’s effective immediately, which means my original itinerary — the one I provided on my application and the one that I’ve been planning for a couple of months now — is no longer valid. I could apply for a Standard Tourist Visa, but that would mean I would have to shell out another PHP6,000+ for the fees and documents. It’s slightly disappointing, but the important thing is that I still got my visa and I’m going to live in my favorite city for a couple of months! :)

Im a bit confused with the question on saving or if you have investments. Why is the amount that your supposed to enter is reflected as monthly income? Are you supposed to divide your investments and savings to 12 months to get the monthly figure?

Hi.. Just like Dianne’s comment.. I’m confused about their question ‘Total monthly income from SAVINGS and INVESTMENT’. I answered it based on my Bank Certificate’s ADB over the last six months that issued to me. It seems like an important question because when i printed out the application form it was boxed. So I’m not sure if I answered it right.. Thanks! Hope you will have to help me with my inquiry! Thanks again.. :)

Hello, Karin! I believe the question is asking you how much do you earn per month, from your job, bank deposits, investments and any other source of income. At the time I answered my form, I only gave them the monthly income I earn from my former job.

If you haven’t submitted your application yet, I encourage you to call the VFS office to double check what that question really means. :)

I submitted my application already. My cousin said that I should make some notes for me to correct my previous answer. My appointment in VFS is on May 11th. Include that note to the printed out VAF and the supporting documents. All of us were confused in answering the Income and Expenditure as if that all answers should tally to your supporting docs (Payslip, Bank Statement). Anyways,, thank you so much dear Kisty Mea for having time answering my question.. We’re hoping we could have a chance to have UK visa.. God speed! :)

    here’s the question:

Do you have savings, properties or other income, for example from stocks and shares?
if you answer yes, there’s a box below where you can add details
    Please Enter Details
Total Monthly Income From Amount in GBP(£)

so if for example i have a savings account and stocks, how are you supposed to get the monthly income?

    there’s also the question of:
What is the cost to you personally of your trip in GBP(£)? and then below it is The cost of your living expenses
is that living expenses while in UK? but doesn’t the cost of your trip already answer that question?
i was thinking it was related to your living situation at the moment, but there’s already another question before it:
How much do you spend each month in GBP(£) on living costs? – so this is for your normal living costs…

Do you have savings, properties or other income, for example from stocks and shares?
If the answer is yes, then provide a brief description of those savings, properties or other income and indicate the total amount of money you receive from those sources (monthly). For example: Savings (PHP10000) + Freelance (PHP15000) + Stocks (PHP7800) = Monthly total.

For your savings account: your passbook should be able to tell you how much money you receive each month (interest earned).
I have no stocks, but if your earnings per month vary, then get the average from the last six months.
Once you know the monthly earnings for both, just add them all up and convert them into GBP

What is the cost to you personally of your trip in GBP(£)?
This refers to the amount of money you will spend for your trip, including flights, accommodation and spending money.

How much do you spend each month in GBP(£) on living costs?
This one refers for your monthly living costs in your own country.

P.S. You are not alone. A lot of people find their application form puzzling as hell! Just go over your application form several times before printing it out.

You have to indicate the average amount of money you receive in your savings (whether it’s interest or your own deposit).

Hello Marge, I’m not a visa consultant but based on your answers, it’s pretty clear why they denied your visa application. You said it yourself, you do not have a strong evidence to go back to your home country and that’s the #1 requirement. PHP30,000 is also very low. I suggest that you get a job, increase your bank account, then try again after 6 months.

I just provide bank certificate and bank statement from my bank and because i am unemployed i did not submit about the COE or something. I only do buy and sell of used cars and my income is the “tubo” of my sell car. I have OR/CR of my car but i red in the website of the embassy that evidence of car ownership is not a part of supporting documents so i did not submit it. My other supporting docs is from my aunt invitation letter and her bank certificate. Do you think they will grant my application?

The undersigned below would like to ask, do i need to create another reference number for the companion of GEORGE V. CABARLOC JR.

under reference number GWF037253836. I have already included the name of his companion under the name of RAFAELITO MALVAR on

the portion( does he has someone to go with him). I had stated there his passport number too aside from MR. GEORGE CABARLOC. What

will be the visa type? Is it the same with George? George Cabarloc is the CEO/President of GC Technik while Rafaelito Malvar is his private

Is the $136.00 payment for one person only? If I create another one for Rafaelito Malvar, it will be $136.00 x 2, am I right?

Your immediate response to this matter will be highly appreciated. Since August 25, 2015 at 130pm will be their appointment.

Thank you so much and More Power.

Uhm, yes? One application = one reference number. I don’t know what type of visa you’re applying for, but I highly recommend that you contact VFS regarding this concern. The purpose of this article is to provide some insights on how the process of application works. My answer also does not guarantee that visa will be approved.

    Hi Everyone,

Im planning to apply a UK visa soon probably this November. My boyfriend will sponsor me and I have requested him to prepare an invitation letter, copy of his passports, land title, ownership of his flat, p60,payslips and bank statements. I my self also have prepared all documents i need my COE , my business permit mayor’s permit , ITR, bank certificate and bank statements.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Is it okay if all documents coming from him are scanned and sent to email?

    2. Does he need to provide the Sponsorship undertaking: form SU07? and who is going to sign the second page of it which states:
Signed by__________________being a person authorized to
make this certificate on behalf of the Secretary of State.

    3. My contract ends this year (december) so i will be unemployed but I still have a business which is apartment for rent I have the Business permit, DTI certificate and Mayor’s permit but land title is named for my mother. Do you think this will suffice?

    4. I will be indicating that I will be staying with my boyfriend for 3 months, do you think I will be granted? Knowing that i will be employed? I have sufficient savings tho on my bank accounts.

    5. Would it be possible if i indicate on application I will just be staying for 1 month but in reality I will be staying for 3 or 4 months? how’s that possible? Do you think I will have trouble with immigration and for my next application of visa?

    6. Do you think I will be granted UK visa? I will be sponsored but I will be out of job soon. But i have my apartment business under my name, sufficient savings on bank and I will be sponsored by my boyfriend.

Hope you can answer my queries :)

Superb tips and advice. Thanks for this blog kisty!

I myself also planning to visit UK by November. My bestfriend is inviting me to visit her in the UK for 1 week. She has residency and currently working. She will assume some docs to support my application such as invitation letter, bank statements, cert from work and her ID’s. On my part, I do have a job for 3 yrs now, i have properties, bank statements for 6 months and credit card statements, i’m also doing part time business as a consultant. For you, what are my chances of getting approved?

So you have a full-time job + part-time job + properties here in the Philippines. I will also assume the ammount in your bank account is also sufficient to cover the whole duration of the trip, so to me, it sounds like you’ll have a higher chance of getting approved naman. :) Good luck!

Hello Kisty! Not only is your blog super informative, it’s very pretty too! And this is an amazing post, thank you for sharing the info. Just want to ask: do you remember how long it took for you to get your UK visa? Like how many days did you have to wait from the VFS submission date. From what I’ve been seeing online, a lot of people get stressed because there’s really no reliable way of tracking the status of your application, and the uncertainty during the waiting period can be nerve-racking. :P Thanks in advance for your advice, and keep up the excellent work on this blog. :)

Hello Raven! Thank you so much! It makes me really happy when people find my blog helpful. <3
Anyway, I believe I received mine two weeks later. :) My friend, who also applied just recently, also received her U.K. visa after 14 days as well. You also have to take into consideration the public holidays happening in the U.K. and Manila.

Please do let me know if you received your visa! :) Good luck!

    Hi Kristy,
In the income and expenditure section, what does the cost of your living expenses pertain to? Is it the projected cost of your food and transportation while in UK. This question appears after the questions on cost of airplane and acommodation. Thank you.

Hi Kisty! Wow! This is a really nice blog! I love traveling, but unfortunately, i needed to secure a visa in some of the countries i have been to and needs to secure another one since i am planning to visit a friend of mine in UK next year. I always try to do some researches months before the planned date, hence, coming across your blog. My friend will not be my sponsor on this travel but i will be staying at her owned house in Birminghan. So i guess all i will be needing from her is her British passport, papers of her house and an invitation letter right?

Hi Kisty Mea. Me and my sister are planning to visit the UK this coming April 2015 after our graduation. I would just like to ask about the processing and releasing time of the UK visa because I am really confused about it. Already read some details online but I just can’t get to sync them in my head unless a person who had actually went through the process will tell me. My question is, after you have submitted your documents at the VFS office, how many days did you wait before your UK visa was released? Was it only 5 to 15 days? Because that’s how some articles I’ve read about said. while some told that it’s like 3 months. I am looking forward to your favourable response. Thank you.

      Hi Azwar,

There’s no fixed number of dates when it comes to the release of visas, but the standard time is 15 working days.

Some are lucky to receive theirs within 5 days, some within 15 days, while some receive their visas after a month or so. This really depends on 1) the type of visa application you’re getting and 2) the documents you’ve submitted.

As for my application in 2013, it was roughly around 10 working days. I submitted my documents a day before May 13 (PH Elections) then received the result during the last week of May.

    Hi Kisty Mea,

I am currently employed by a UK company here in the Philippines. It is their first time to send someone from the Philippines to UK for business purposes (training). Everything will be shouldered by the company. Both of us do not know the process and we’re also confused on the information being provided by the embassy. Do you happen to know what requirements do they require for such instance?

    Thanks a lot!

Hi Rody, I’m sorry I don’t. My best suggestion is take the quiz (I provided the link on the blog post) on which visa to take, so you’ll have an idea what kind of documents you need to gather.

    Hi Kisty Mea,

I came across your blog and I have got more information I need. I have questions though. I hope you can help me as I have a slightly complicated situation. I will be applying for the same visa to be sponsored by my British cousin (we are first cousins. His mom and my dad are siblings):

    1. My sister applied for a UK visa (was sponsored by our British cousin) but she was rejected because she does not have a proof that they were cousins. She advised to submit birth certificates of our aunt (our British cousin’s mother); our British cousin’s; hers and our dad’s. The problem is, our aunt (his mom) does not have a birth certificate. Question, do you any other proof that we can present to show that we’re indeed related? We have pictures together whenever he visits the country. Would that suffice?

    2. How can I possibly establish my family and socio-economic ties when I am technically unemployed and doesn’t have any business nor lands owned? I left my job last May 2015 because I have to watch over my dad (who is a senior citizen) coz all my siblings are staying in the university dorm during school days. I have regular source of income every month by doing a research job ( appearing as remittance to my bank account) from my British cousin.

    3. I have only traveled in six countries in the Southeast Asian region, all of them are visa-free. I will just go to UK because my cousin wants to tour me around. I’m staying there for one or two weeks only. Do you think I have a chance to be approved?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi Kristy,

My boyfriend in UK will be sponsoring my application and all expenses, so that means I need to acquire from him invitation letters and other supporting documents. My question is, does his supporting documents and invitation letter needs to be original or scanned copy sent through email is okay?

    Please advise.
    And thanks. =)

What did the website say? If the website specifically asked for original documents, then original documents talaga.

You have to check sa GOV.UK website to be sure, kasi with France, if you’re staying with a local, they have to snail mail a piece of document for you to submit sa Embassy.

Pero in my case, when Hostelling International, sponsored my trip to the UK, they only sent me email conversations and scanned copies of the invitation letter. :)
