How To Take Care Of Your Underarms

Here’s a blog entry that many of you have requested. How do I take care of my underarms? How do I keep them “white” or “fair’ or something? These tips I’ve written here are only based on my experience and does not guarantee that it will work on you. If you have a severe skin problem, it is best to consult a doctor than DIY-ing your way to ~beauty~.

1. Refrain from shaving, plucking and/or use hair removal creams.

I’ve tried all of them and they yielded different results. Results meaning in the quality of the hair growth. If you shave or use hair removal cream (ex. Veet), you’re only removing the hair on the surface of your skin. This is one of the many factors why underarms still look darker. Not to mention, both method can cause ingrown hair.

Plucking, on the other hand, removes the hair from the root but 1) it’s time consuming, and 2) can cause chicken skin (small bumps). Though I have to say, plucking feels great sometimes.

I recommend waxing because it’ll pull the hair from the root, in one go. I recommend Lay Bare for underarms and Strip for brazilian and the face. I haven’t tried Wink for waxing, but I wrote a review about their underarm laser treatment.

2. No deodorants and antiperspirants.

Ok, you may want to skip this tip if you sweat a lot or cause body odor. But I’m gonna confess: I don’t use deodorants and antiperspirants. Since high school (Ok, there was a time I used Dove for a week because it was free). I guess it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that these products contain chemical compounds, which may or may not cause underarm darkness. I don’t know how true is that, but I’ll just put it here for your reference.

3. Don’t scratch ‘em.

I think this is a very common ‘mannerism’ when you shave. Ingrown hair cause skin to be itchy, so let’s go back to Tip #1. I also suggest you refrain from wearing tight clothing.

4. Exfoliate.

Self-explanation: Exfoliating, especially when you take a shower, will help get rid of the dead skin cells.

5. Consult a dermatologist.

A real dermatologist, ok. I don’t recommend going to the beauty clinics found in malls because even if they’re certified, they’re more prone to hard-sell their products. While I know getting a consultation can be expensive, treating a problem during the early stages of a possible skin condition is cheaper in the long run.

6. Confidence, baby!

So what if your underarms aren’t that fair? That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy wearing sleeveless! Stop listening to media and to other people. Learn how to love yourself and embrace your flaws. The moment you decided to do that, I can guarantee you that both your inner and outer beauty will shine. :)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does waxing hurt?
For underarms, not so much. I think it’ll be a bit painful during the first two sessions though.

What kind of deodorants or antiperspirants do you use?
None. I stopped using them since high school. There are times that I do get smell (i.e. after a sports activity), I pour a small amount of hand sanitizer on a tissue paper and wipe it on my underarms… or I take a really long bath and do #4.

I want to completely remove the hair. Is there any way to do this?
No. There’s no 100% way to remove hair from your live body. Laser hair removal treatments, however, can reduce a significant amount of hair regrowth.

Have you ever used any whitening products for your underarms?
A few times. My mom once bought me an underarm skincare kit and I’d like to think that it did help lighten my underarms, but it also made my skin ridiculously thinner or sensitive. It’s like a peeling whitening kit if I’m not mistaken.

For my underarms, I use waxing or plucking. I stop using deodorants years ago because it makes my skin darker. For underarm sweating, I use an aluminum chloride gel recommended by my dermatologist. Recently, I’m using Sunflower Beauty Oil from Human nature every night to lighten my UA. It works naman, I guess, after using for a few months.

i wax and shave. it depends on my mood :)) waxing is really nice and i love the effect. feeling ko ang kinis kinis ng underarms ko pag nag wax ako BUT super hassle. so for emergency, i shave xD lol. and about deodorants, only use them siguro once a month? pag talagang super heavy ang activity just to be sure ;) ahhahaha!

Hi Im only 15 but I have chicken skin and dark ua. Im already treating my dark ua by calamansi but yung chicken skin ganon padin. My mom says na mawawala din naman daw yun. Is it true? Na naturally mawawala din ang chicken skin? Thanks :)

Baking soda will do for chicken skin. Mix it with water to make a paste tapos refrain from plucking. I used to pluck before then I noticed na parang nag kakatigyawat sya because of hair ingrown. I think that’s the cause of chicken skin.

If you have dark UA, you might want to try Skinstation’s whitening cream. I think it’s around 350-400pesos. Merong with bleach 3x a week lang application then the subtle one which is everynight. I suggest you buy both kasi it works for me.

Ganyan din ako before… then I switched yung dove na deodorant na spray instead of roll-ons… and pinili ko yung Pure, no fragrance, no whitening, just protection from sweating… hindi umiitim yung underarm ko. So it’s good. :)

Yes, you can. DIY waxing kits are available in the beauty section in SM. Just follow the instructions on the box/label of the waxing product you’ll buy.

Veet Strips are expensive but the fastest and non-messy wax kit that I’ve tried so far.

Milcu works for me fine. Nung nagtry ako magdeo sobrang kati ng UA ko. So I stopped pero ang naging problem ko naman ay wet UA. My mother bought me Milcu. My UAs are not dark, and I have less sweating. I also do wax to get rid of the hair.

You could try the suggestions above. If that doesn’t work, a derma might be able to help or get those laser revlite sessions

For those who want whiter underarms: cut 1 calamansi in half and rub it on. Leave them for at least 5 minutes before taking a shower. I do this two-three times a week and it makes my ua fairer :)

hair laser is the best. if it fits your budget, go to belo (greenhills branch have the best machines) with 8 sessions done you will be hair free . ive done it since 2008, till now the growth is very minimal, around 1/2 of 1%, i only cut it with scissor. for chicken skin, try retenoic acid at night 1-2% cream. for odor free, after bath, rub a lemon or calamansi on your UA then rinse with water.

okay, i mostly clicked on this article because of that fun title photo! i used to be very conscious of my underarms and then… i got older. getting older means you have less time/energy to worry about what other people think so i just really don’t care as much now, haha! but i definitely agree with exfoliating, waxing, and staying away from anti-perspirants/deodorants! i only ever apply them if i know i’ll be out all day long (rare) and/or extra active (even more rare). the only thing i don’t like about waxing is being in between sessions, when you have to let the hair grow out a bit so they’re easier to remove. my pits feel extra smelly when there’s hair. :(

Hello, I have a suggestion for a homemade exfoliating and whitening regime.

Mix honey and sugar in a small bowl until it turns to paste. Gently rub on area for at least five minutes, then wash off. Dab fresh squeeze lemon juice on area with a cotton ball and leave overnight. I guess you could also use fresh squeeze calamansi juice if lemon is not available.

I’ve been doing it for a while on my lips and knees and it works wonders. (Haven’t tried it in my ua though but it could work.)

Also if you don’t want to use deos/anti-perspirants but want to get rid of BO, mix one cap (as in the bottle cap) bleach (Clorox, Zonrox) with a liter of water and apply to underarms. I suggest washing the body with the mixture at night before going to bed (like a bath) so you won’t smell like bleach in the mornings, but highly discouraged if you have bleach allergies. Another is simply mixing baking soda and water until it turns to paste and use it as your deo. My cousin’s dermatologist advised this and it does work. 😊

      Thanks for the suggestions!

I think the bleach and water combo should only be used as a last resort and people who would like to do this should research first. :) Bleach, after all, is too powerful for the skin.

Before medyo dark UA ko especially sa folds. Tapos may chicken skin pa. Nag try ako magdeo before kasi mabilis. Hehe! Di hassle. Pero sabi ng Mom ko calamansi lang kasi nakakaitim nga daw mga deo. So nagtry ako. At first talaga naman! Ang kati at hapdi ng calamansi. As in! Maybe because acid siya. Di ko na tinuloy. So nagtry ako ng Milcu. Ok naman walang amoy kaya lang di naman pumuti. Haha! So nagswitch ako sa tawas. Ang ayoko lang sa tawas pag nagpawis na parang may metallic na amoy. Diba? O ako lang? Hahaha! So nag-calamansi na naman ako. Sa una lang siya mahapdi at itchy. Pero sa pag nasanay na UA di na. So far, ang ganda ng effect. Walang amoy ang UA. As in wala kahit maghapon at ga-falls ang pagpawis! Tapos of course magpapawis syempre pero normal process naman ng body yun. Nakakaputi talaga. Pero ilang months makikita ang effect. I suggest mag-exfoliate. Once a week ako mag-scrub ng whole body. Gamit ko yung spa salt ng A-bonne plus calamansi. Hehe! Yun lang.
